Drone GoPro Combination

Using this combination is the most popular way to shoot aerial videos currently. The reason for this is the simplicity and affordability. Not to mention the amount of accessories available for GoPro cameras.

To get started you obviously need a drone and a GoPro camera. The drone needs to be powerful enough to be able to fly with the camera attached. Luckily GoPro is quite a light camera weighing at 163 grams (5.75 oz) with a case, battery and MicroSD card. Choosing a right drone isn’t too hard either thanks to the amount of reviews online. You can either read the reviews here or just search on google! You also have the opportunity to either go for a special made for GoPro drone or use your own creativity to attach the camera to the drone.

Different Combinations

The most popular drone GoPro combination currently is the DJI Phantom 2 + GoPro. This is due to the high quality of the DJI Phantom 2 and of course the accessories coming with it. There’s no need spend hours of figuring how to mount the camera. The drone comes with a special mount that can be straight attached to the Phantom. The new combo Zenmuse Gimbal H3-3D even lets you move the camera with the controller.

Due to the light weight of the camera, more and more people have also added it to the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0. This combo demands a lot more work because the AR.Drone isn’t meant for added weight. You can search for guides on youtube on how to do this.

Another choice you have is to use the STORM Drone 4. It is made specifically for the GoPro and you can mount it easily with the adhesive stock mount. Comparing to the DJI Phantom 2 it definitely wins at the price costing $360. There’s also an option for a special “Jello Killer” base which eliminates motor vibrations from the video.

Not every drone is a quadcopter tough. Lehmann La100 is built for the GoPro camera. It is a high end unmanned aerial vehicle that can fly in even the most harsh climate conditions. It looks extremely similar to standard military drone. The plus side is that all it needs is a stock adhesive mount for the camera.

Attaching The GoPro

First of all bare in mind that attaching the GoPro depends completely on the drone and can be completely different. If you have a drone that demands for an adhesive mount then your life is simple. Glue the adhesive mount to the vehicle. Put the camera into a case, attach it to the mount and you are pretty much done. The next step would be to connect your smartphone or tablet to the gadgets and that’s it.

If you happen to have a DJI Phantom 2 then things are a little bit different. Of course nothing is stopping you from using the plain adhesive mount. However it also allows the use of special mounts called the Zenmuse Gimbal H3-3D and H3-2D which are designed specifically for the GoPro Hero3. The difference between the H3-3D and H3-2D is the stabilization axis dimensions. H3-3D stabilizes the camera in both 3-axis while the 2D in 2-axis.

Firstly you need to install the Zenmuse Gimbal mount to the drone. To see how to attach them you can watch the videos below:

After you finished attaching the mount you need to place the GoPro between the brackets. Then it’s nothing but connecting the camera to the smartphone or tablet via WiFi and you are ready.

PS. Pay in mind that a delay can occur while streaming the live feed from your phone or tablet. The delay on the iPhone is known to be around 4 seconds and 2 seconds on an android. This is due to the WiFi connection.
