Camera Mounting On Drones

Aerial photography has become more and more popular. To shoot quality videos you need a quality a camera. That has made people find ways to attach cameras to their drones. However doing that can become quite problematic.

Camera Mounting

Mounting a camera is simple if you have bought a drone that comes with a special mount. The most popular camera with mounts is probably the GoPro. Not all drones still support it though. For example attaching it to the AR.Parrot 2.0 can be quite complicated. This is even more problematic with other action cameras. So what can you do?

First of all look at your camera manufacturers webpage. Most action cameras have mounts that you can buy separately. If you see anything suitable then get it and figure a way to attach it.

Secondly prepare to get creative. Youtube is full of videos that will either help you or provide you with ideas. The thing you should always keep in mind is that weight matters. You can’t build a massive mount, you need to keep it as light as possible.

Drones can vibrate quite a lot because of the motors. To avoid seeing that on the videos, try going with soft mounts. If you plan on just taking photos then there’s no difference between the hard and soft mounts.

Drone GoPro Mounting Examples

You can use these examples on other action cameras as well. All you have to do is find a similar frame that fits yours and from there on follow the examples.

Heres a tutorial how to mount a GoPro camera to the AR.Drone 2.0

On this tutorial he used the GoPro Frame Mount which can be bought on amazon $18.50. Sony for example has its own Action Cam Adhesive Mount Pack for $20. An adhesive mount is a way to go here if your drone doesn’t have its own mounting.

Life is easy when you got a product from DJI. DJI Phantom 1 comes with a GoPro camera mount. With the Phantom 2 you have the choice of buying a separate one or one with it. Here’s an example how to attach a camera to the Phantom 2

They used the new H3-2D mount which removes vibrations.
