DJI Releases Phantom 3

DJI has finally released new quadcopters in their most popular Phantom series: Phantom 3 Professional and Phantom 3 Advanced.

UPDATE: You can check our Phantom 3 review here!

UPDATE! Downloading and installing the latest firmware, and updating the DJI GO app to the latest version (iOS V2.2.0 and Android V2.1.0 ), will enable the long waited Waypoints, Follow Me, Point Of Interest, Home Lock and Course Lock modes!

Both of the new DJI Phantom 3 represent the most intelligent and powerful consumer drones up to date. The only difference between them is the camera and the battery charge rate. We have put together a list of new features on both of the drones:

Phantom 3 Features

  • Brand new 4k and 1080p video camera (more info below)
  • Built-in DJI Lightbridge (720p Live HD view)
  • New controller with 1.2mile (2km) range
  • DJI Pilot App
  • Visual and ultrasonic sensors
  • Auto takeoff
  • New battery

DJI is promising all the features that we have been missing in the Phantom series! The visual and ultrasonic sensors make flying the drone much easier indoors. They scan the floor under it and create patterns to indentify its position and move more accurately.

If you were hoping for follow me and ground station features then sadly still a No. The Phantom 3 has the hardware to allow it but DJI is keeping them to handle the positioning and fly to home features.

However, DJI has opened the access to developers and so we will probably see 3rd party apps that will allow the follow me and waypoint features!

Phantom 3 Advanced

DJI Phantom 3 Advanced has the weakest camera out of the 2 but is also the cheapest. It features a 1080p 60fps camera. The camera has also got a 94º field of view lens which eliminates distortion and fish-eye style view the GoPro has. An enhanced sensor allows more clarity and less noise while taking pictures at 12MP.

Another difference between the two is the battery charging time. The advanced version will charge the Phantom 3 battery in 96 minutes.

The Phantom 3 Advanced can be pre-ordered here for $999 (€1099)

Phantom 3 Professional

The Professional version features a new 4K 30fps camera. Everything else about the camera is the same as on the Advanced. The battery charging on the Professional, however is a lot faster – 60 minutes.

The Phantom 3 Professional can be pre-ordered here for $1259 (€1399)

The real question now is, Phantom 3 Professional, Advanced or maybe even Phantom 2? Basically if you want a simple ready to fly drone that comes with a camera then DJI Phantom 3 is made for you. Professional or advanced? That is up to you completely if you want the 4K availability or not.

    Fly time?

DJI claims 23 minutes with a fully charged battery. The real time is probably a bit less, around 20 minutes but we will see exactly once the first phantoms are delivered
